The South Island’s West Coast

Posted by Ruth Atherley on May 26, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I spent some time on the West Coast last year and loved it.  Visiting the West Coast of the Southern Alps is an “epic journey” through some of the world’s most spectacular coastlines, mountains and rainforests. One of the things that I heard from the West Coast team is that many people regret not planning enough time when they are in this area of New Zealand. This is an incredible place. If you are planning to visit here, add an extra day or two. You won’t regret it.

The West Coast is an adventure and nature wonderland. There are beach and forest walks to suit all ages and fitness levels, eco-tourism, caving, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, jet boating, jet skiing, glacier walks, scenic flights, mountain biking, horse treks, river and sea fishing, gold panning, exploring old gold mines and ghost towns – and that’s just to name a few activities!

There are some amazing people here too – real characters. If you stop in a café or bar, don’t be surprised if you get into a conversation with a stranger and end up with a new friend.

This is a beautiful area, but it’s not as small as it looks on the map! Make sure you give yourself enough time here.
