Central Otago

Central Otago, affectionately called “Central” by those that know it well, covers an area of 10,000 km and has fewer than 17,000 permanent residents. It is a really interesting place with a long trail that you can cycle, a history of gold mining, and some great wineries.
The Rail Trail is built on the foundations of the Otago Central Railway. The 150 km gravel-surface can be cycled or walked and there are lots of opportunities to check out local culture, food and wine along the way. (Ah yes, there always seems to be wine wherever you go in New Zealand.)
When I met with the very lovely Central Otago Tourism team, I learned that there is a very strong curling culture in this area. Go figure! Check out this story about curling.
The Central Otago region is another one that goes on my wish list for my next trip. It sounds like a unique, interesting area.
